5-on-5 is our highly-subjective series of lists released on the 5th day of every month. Our goal is to have fun sharing some of our favorites in various categories. From fish to French fries, pizza to pasties, follow our foodie lists for monthly recommendations across Michigan.
We all know institutions like Loui’s, Cloverleaf, and Buddy’s, but what about other players in the Detroit-style pizza game creating noteworthy pies? Here are five pizzerias in the Detroit area you may not have tried yet.
Palazzo di Pizza (Royal Oak)

Palazzo di Pizza has built a sizeable following in Royal Oak since opening in 2019. If you love corner slices, this is the place for you. Their pizzas feature all corner slices so there’s no more fighting with your friends and family.
Detroit Style Pizza Co. (St. Clair Shores)

Detroit Style Pizza Co. may be tucked away in St. Clair Shores, but don’t sleep on their version of square deep dish. This award-winning shop has superb specialties like the Greektown with ham, feta, black olives, red onions, and tomatoes.
Belle Isle Pizza (Detroit)
Belle Isle Pizza, situated in Detroit’s West Village across from — wait for it — Belle Isle, serves Detroit-style pies with hometown pride. Check out their neighborhood-themed pizzas like the Corktown (corned beef, thousand island dressing, Swiss, and sauerkraut) and Mexicantown (house-made salsa, cheddar, seasoned ground beef, black olives, and more).
Amar Pizza (Hamtramck & Troy)

While their Bangladeshi-inspired pizza has won local awards, Amar Pizza may still be foreign to Detroit-style purists. We think you should give their tantalizing Tandoori Pizza a try. If you’re a heat seeker, set your mouth on fire with their Ghost Pizza.
Uncle Andy’s Pizza (Multiple Locations)

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’re probably well aware of Uncle Andy’s Pizza. But for some reason this popular pizza shop serving Detroit-style pizza and Triple Cheese Bread doesn’t appear on lists from large media outlets around town. Their loss!
