While craft breweries have dominated the spotlight for some time, Motor City Gas has quietly established a solid whiskey distilling operation in Royal Oak, Michigan. Since opening on March 17, 2015, the newest distillery on the block has gathered a loyal following from surrounding neighborhoods and beyond.
Located at 325 E 4th St., Motor City Gas is a nice addition to the drinking options in and around Royal Oak. Although the hours are limited, the rustic tasting room allows whiskey experts and novices alike the opportunity to enjoy local spirits in a non-pretentious atmosphere. Even the security dog, Rye, wants you to feel right at home.
We had a chance to chat with owner Rich Lockwood, take some pictures and, of course, drink some whiskey.
Our Mint Julep and Old Fashioned cocktails went down easy as we learned a little bit about the whiskey distilling business and how Motor City Gas came to be. Fun fact: The idea for Motor City Gas was hatched at Rich’s wedding after his guests raved about the whiskey he distilled for the special day.
The entire whiskey-making process is done in-house, so you’re getting your libations straight from the source. Stop by for a drink in the tasting room, to purchase a bottle of your choosing, or both.
While we were there, numerous patrons stopped by to make purchases, speaking to the adoption of the distillery by the community. In fact, we read that ROAK Brewing is using barrels from Motor City Gas for their barrel-aged beer program.
