In the restaurant industry, standing tall after 10 years is no easy feat. Mallie’s Sports Grill & Bar of Southgate, Michigan, is one of the fortunate establishments to stand the test of time.
Known for its burgers, smoked gouda mac & cheese, and being ‘the place’ to watch sports downriver (40 TVs, anyone?), Mallie’s has persevered through good times and bad.
To stand out from the crowd, Mallie’s has gone big, very big. They currently hold the Guinness World Record for the largest commercially available hamburger and offer a 10 lb. burger eating challenge.
National recognition on Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food hasn’t hurt, either. In 2009, Adam Richman and an army of volunteers attempted to devour the Absolutely Ridiculous Burger, featuring a 190 lb. beef patty that was so big, it had to be cooked in an oven for 16 hours.
In addition to mammoth burgers, Mallie’s has put itself on the map for having one of America’s spiciest food challenges.
The Hellfire Hat Trick challenge requires contestants to eat one Hellfire Burger, six Hellfire Wings and one bowl of Hellfire Chili, all without the assistance of milk or other dairy products. The challenge is so serious, you have to sign a waiver to participate.
Steve Mallie, owner, notes that conquering the Hellfire Challenge is no easy achievement. The guys at Hell Yeah Detroit took their shot at it, as well as the 10 lb. burger challenge, to no avail.
To celebrate its longevity, Mallie’s held a day-long 10th Anniversary party on Saturday, August 1, 2015. We crashed the festivities and were greeted with a variety of games, food and drink specials, and more.
